Old school wineries from CA are:

Beringer
Mondavi
BV
Stags Leap
Pedroncelli
Gundlach-Bundschu

A Cabernet Sauvignon from any of those (esp top 4) would be a great gift and a classic wine. You can spend from $10 to $100+ on wines from these wineries. Beringer Private Reserve, Mondavi Reserve, and BV Georges LaTour are all in the $75 or more range, but the same wineries have less expensive labels that are all very respectable too.

The best wines in the world come from France. A bottle of good Bordeaux would be an appropriate gift, and not frightfully expensive either.

Get the Louis Jadot Beaujolais Villages. It's around 14-15. French white wine. Popular and very good!

If they're "old school", they'll appreciate "BV - Merlot". Moderately priced and very flavorful. I know I'd like to get a bottle or three for the holidays.

For classy, you can't beat a good Bordeaux. How much are you looking to spend? For $20, you can get a good quality Bordeaux. I recommend 2001 Chateau La Prade.

I think a good Resling is good for anyone to enjoy. Sweet, not too tart. Or what i really like is a Muskadine wine from North Carolina. Very different and sweet. If you want to impress someone.

If you like them, a nice California Merlow or Chardonney. If you dislike them, a gallon of Thunderbird!
