Well, Pinot Noir is vin ordinaire in France. Americans get all excited over the names of grapes and that is not really the name of the wine. It is not the fault of the American public but rather the fault of our marketing companies. Your Dad would like a French Burgundy.
Cool red wine to 50 to 55 degress. You can decant it into another bottle to smooth the flavor.
Also, got to tell you the Australians make some great wines at a small fraction of the price and Australian wines travel better than French or Italian wines (on the boat from the old country). Tyrrell's Long Flat Red is smashing and it is less than $15 a bottle.
Anyway, here are some good suggestions that will make you Dad happy and get him off the pinot noir horse.

I love best the Chateau Margaux but do not get one that is less than 8 years.
