Hey, at least you were drinking wine.....White Zinfandel to me is like a "starter" wine with traing wheels that helps you eventually learn to appreciate all other wines that are a bit more dry, both red and white. I had a boss that thought Mogen David was perfect with a fine steak....he called dry wines "old sour vinegar".
Be informed, that most even halfway serious wine drinkers (snobs) really look down on those who drink white Zinfandel.
Personally, I think you wife's boss showed incredibly bad manners by making his comment. Next time (if ever) order something else like a beer or a mixed drink. Oh yeah, tell your wife to get off your back...
