So, a few weeks ago, we stop into this little wine shop, I taste and decide to by this wine, I loved it, savored it, infact, I enjoyed it for 4 evenings.
We happen to stop in there again his weekend and see that the place is going out of business,(maybe that should have been my first clue), ofcourse I quickly scoop up 2 bottles of my beloved Adamo. I open it tonight, anticipating the wonderful occasion a head of me......the wine taste awful.
It taste almost moldy, or over ripe, not so moldy it would get me sick, but there is something not right......last time I enjoyed it so much.
I know I wasn't just imagining how much I enjoyed it last time....what happened? I let it breath for a few minutes...do I need to let it breath more? Is there anything I can do? I still have one bottle left, and the place is closed.....
so is that what the "moldy" taste is, Corked?
I didn't see any mold. Can it make some one sick?

Yes, it happens once a while.

The bad thing is we can barely differenetiate a bad one from the good others.

But the followings may be pre-warning of rotting before tasting:
- mould on the cork and bad/ unusal/ strong smell of the cork
- there isn't any air bubbles when the wine is poured down into the glass. Usually many small bubbles would be formed once the wine is in touch with air and into the glass. A bad one is already oxidized by the organisms bleeding in the wine - so no small bubbles.

Usually, you can smell the strong sick odour of the wine when it has gone bad. If you want to be sure, just sip a little to avoid the bad wine filling your mouth.

Usually , we say that the wine is "corked" when it has gone bad.

Sounds like taint. A natural contamination that can occur to almost any wine sealed with natural cork. There is an organism that contaminates the cork that can be tasted down to the parts per trillion. It is the number one problem with natural cork.

Synthetic cork is no guarantee either. Synthetic corks have different problems. It too could be compromised.

The bottle could also have been improperly stored or a problem occurred at time of bottling.

Breathing won't help.

It happens. Every once in a while one hears of a very old very rare bottle bought at auction for an obscene amount of money, and when it is opened it is vinegar. That's the risk.

Hopefully your last bottle will be fine.

The good news is that most purveyors will replace a bad bottle. The bad news is that your store is out of business.

You might try contacting the vineyard. Maybe they will offer you a bottle of 2005 or 2006 since the 2004 probably is finished. If you are far from the vineyard, that may not be practical or cost effective. On the bright side at least it wasn't your last bottle of rare vintage cult cab or Bordeaux.
